    Epilepsy Affects You...

Epilepsy is a neurological disorder characterized by a tendency to have recurrent seizures. Seizures occur when excess electrochemical activity interferes with brain function. Seizures can look like many different things. Each individual with epilepsy is unique and is entitled to respect.

Almost three million people in the United States have epilepsy - that's more than have cerebral palsy, cystic fibrosis, muscular dystrophy and multiple sclerosis combined. Current treatments control seizures in only half of people who have epilepsy. In 70% of cases, the cause of epilepsy is unknown. Head injuries are the leading known cause of epilepsy.

Learn appropriate seizure first aid and how to help prevent epilepsy by contacting the Epilepsy Foundation of Western Wisconsin.
